Welcome to Plane & Chisel
Why hello there.
Plane & Chisel is an Internet thing devoted to finding and drawing attention to interesting ideas, plans, tips and tools relating to the craft of woodworking.
After building my first woodworking project many years ago, I've been hooked on the process of working with wood. Along the way I've made a lot of mistakes, encountered good and bad advice, made some ok furniture, some bad furniture and some pretty good furniture.
There's a lot of zen in woodworking and I find it pushes me to think in a different way than I normally would. Understanding a project completely and mentally trying aspects of your plan out in your head before committing to the first cut is a fascinating process and allows me seemingly endless intellectual joy (as well as pain) in a way that many modern processes and problems don't.
I picked up woodworking on a lark, it had never occurred to me that I would ever consider myself a woodworker. But I needed a desk for my house and couldn't find one that fit my office as precisely as I wanted. And so began a long journey that I started almost 10 years ago now.
In the time since I began, I've learned a lot. The great thing about woodworking is that you are constantly incorporating new ideas or little aspects of what someone else (often via the Internet) has taught you. You have to have a keen eye for picking out who actually knows what they are doing and who has good ideas about how to approach whichever problem you are currently befuddled by.
I started thinking recently about all the time I spend doing this: researching, discovering, applying. And I thought maybe it was possible that I have something I can add to someone else's woodworking journey. That was the beginning of this project: Plane & Chisel.
The point of this whole thing is that you, dear reader, will find something interesting or helpful here. If that turns out to be true, I'd love to hear about it, so drop me a line at: [email protected].
Thanks for reading and taking a few minutes out of your day to consider this little portion of the Internet. If you are intrigued at all, take a sec and Sign up for our newsletter, I promise I will never spam you and will only attempt to pass along information that I think you'll find useful. If the email I create isn't your cup of tea, you can opt out of it at any time. This is simply my way to share the best woodworking content I've seen all week with other like minded individuals. I dare say I think you may like it and actually find it to be useful.
Happy woodworking and keep on sawing wood.
